Sparrow Lake Historical Society - was established in 1984 and incorporated in 1992. We are an affiliate menber ot the Ontario Historical Society.
The Society has an open membership and we meet 3 times a year . Also a newsletter is published 3 times a year. Membership is a nominal $10.00 per person per year or $ 20.00 for a family. There are currently 70 families on our mailing list.
Our members enjoy informal meetings Spring, Summer and Fall with field trips to resorts and summer homes with historical signifigance and sometimes a barge ride with an on-board picnic is arranged in July. A memorial plaque has been dedicated at Martin's Store, Port Stanton to commemorate early pioneer Thomas Stanton and his wife Ellen Franklin who founded the village of Port Stanton.
Our Fall meeting in September is traditionally a pot-luck dinner meeting with a guest speaker and slide show. Meetings are held at the Severn Bridge Women's Institute Hall.
Aims and Objectives - The purpose of the Society is to record and tell the local history of the lake and it's environs. The geographic area from Severn Bridge to the east and The Big Chute to the west , and all the Severn River in between is part of our concern. We concentrate on the history of the many summer resorts and lodges on Sparrow Lake and the pioneer families that established them. Such names as Schultz, Rhoel, Darker, Tresidder, Stanton, Franklin, Heidman, Stein, Bennett, Bagley, Nichols, Monahan, Doolittle, Jones, Bowers, Wiancko, Miller, McLeod, Maguire, Franklin, Clipsham are included in our archives.
We support several local authors on the history -
